Dog Kennel Assistant

Duties:

Dog Kennel Assistants walk our shelter dogs.

Days and Hours Needed:

Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday between 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Dog Walkers that are volunteering Monday, Thursday, and Sunday between the hours of 9:30 am to 12 pm. (With Prior Approval)

Responsibilities include:

• Walk designated dogs on leash in the designated area located on shelter property
• Socialize designated dogs in the shelter’s play pens
• Interact with dogs in proper and non-aggressive play
• Clean up and tidy dog kennels as needed
• Abide by all safety expectations
• Have fun!

Qualifications:

• A willing attitude and a genuine care for people and animals are essential.
• Extensive walking is required with frequent bending and kneeling.
• All Volunteers must attend a general volunteer information session and orientation.
• Adequate conversational English is required in order that the individual be able to take direction, understand how to complete job tasks, communicate adequately with staff, visitors and other volunteers effectively, understand and follow safety guidelines and understand the volunteer guide and all shelter policies.
• As a shelter volunteer, you may be exposed to blood, fluids, and excrement, outside weather, loud or unpleasant noises, and unpleasant odors.
• Volunteers must have the ability to interact with the public, shelter staff and other volunteers in a courteous and respectful manner, even in stressful situations.
• Volunteers must also have the ability to communicate well and follow directions with minimal direct supervision.
• Volunteers must be willing to walk dogs in a variety of conditions through all seasons including summer heat, winter cold, rain, etc.
• Volunteers must be able to follow all safety protocol and shelter procedures as instructed.
• Must be able to physically be able to walk, with a dog on a leash, pick up animal droppings, perform general cleaning duties.
• Volunteer must be able to make decisions and observations based on a dogs observed behavior and report any and all concerns to the shelter director.
